Xiamen recently hosted a ceremonial launch of a new multimodal transport route connecting southeast Fujian and the countries that participate in the Gulf Cooperation Council. The council includes seven Persian Gulf countries -- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Port authorities said that the new sea-rail service simplifies export procedures to the Gulf region. The route requires a single declaration process for each batch of goods, allowing a cost savings of up to 25 percent and reducing transit time by approximately seven days. Smart containers on the route can be tracked in real time. The route begins in Nanchang, Jiangxi, and passes through Xiamen before connecting to Saudi Arabia. The inaugural container ship to ply the route included a load of automobile parts from Xiamen that were bound for Saudi Arabia. |
