A promotional event was held in Xiamen, East China’s Fujian province on June 8 to mark the 2026 World Oceans Day and China Ocean Day.

Under the theme “Guarding the Blue, Seeking Strength from the Sea”, the event brought together domestic and international marine experts and scholars, as well as representatives from public welfare organizations and marine-related enterprises to exchange views on marine conservation and sustainable development and build consensus on global ocean governance.

The event featured a series of activities, including the release of major research findings, popular science lectures, the launch of new platforms, cooperation signings and cross-sector dialogues.

A host of achievements of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development were unveiled, showcasing China’s latest progress in marine research. A popular science lecture, delivered by a prominent academician, highlighted cutting-edge marine knowledge. The National Marine Awareness Education (Xiamen) Base was officially inaugurated, alongside the launch of a public participation platform for marine biodiversity.

Organizers also announced the results of the 15th National Marine Knowledge Contest and released a new book, “Atlas of Geographical Names of China’s Sea Areas and Islands.” These efforts diversified marine science popularization approaches and boosted public engagement.

The Fujian Ocean Innovation Center signed strategic cooperation agreements with Danaher Corporation and ISTRONG Technology Company Limited respectively, aiming to accelerate the transformation and industrial application of marine scientific and technological achievements.

During the dialogue session, participating guests conducted in-depth discussions on how to foster cross-sector collaboration to contribute to marine conservation and development.

The Xiamen Initiative for the 2026 World Oceans Day and China Ocean Day was also issued at the event. The Initiative calls on all stakeholders to strengthen cooperation in marine ecological protection, marine technological innovation and ocean governance, and to jointly protect our blue home.

The event was jointly hosted by the China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association, the Pacific Society of China, the China Oceanic Development Foundation, and the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development.
