Xiamen to host 2017 BRICS summit
2016/10/19
China will host the ninth BRICS annual summit in Xiamen in September 2017 as the country assumes the rotating chair of the emerging-market bloc.
The announcement was made by President Xi Jinping on Sunday while attending the eighth summit in Goa, India.
Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi, South African President Jacob Zuma, Brazilian President Michel Temerand and Russian President Vladimir Putin were also in attendance to discuss the cooperation and issues of common concern. The bloc’s leaders aimed to find“responsive, inclusive and collective solutions” to tackle world issues.
Xi said that China expects to work with all stakeholders to implement the consensuses reached at previous sessions of the summit to deepen their partnerships and write a new chapter for the BRICS cooperation, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Xi pledged that China will support the New Development Bank's work to make its first group of projects successful. The bank symbolizes the cooperation between the BRICS nations.
Business leaders in the BRICS bloc should promote confidence and contribute to global growth through improved investment in emerging economies, President Xi said on Oct 16, according to China Daily.
Xi noted while meeting with business executives that the economies in BRICS nations slowed as a result of the deep adjustments and challenges in global economy and cited protectionism and anti-globalization sentiment as the threats to the recovery of global economy.
